About Us
In 1979, Michael Simon purchased seven acres of riverfront orchard, planted in red and golden delicious apple trees. The agricultural scene throughout the Okanogan River valley at the time was a mono-culture of these two varieties. Shortly after purchasing the orchard, Simon began to add variety to the farm, both in apples and in the addition of stone fruits. An adjoining four acres went up for auction in 1982, and completed the eleven acres that is Applecart Fruits today.
After two decades of reconditioning the soil, and diversifying the crops, Applecart was certified organic in 1999. In 2006, Michael Simon joined together with several other Okanogan based organic farms to create the Okanogan Producers Marketing Association, a farmer cooperative that seeks to maximize farmer profit by pooling resources into a sales and distribution alliance. This allows participating farmers to sell their products directly, avoiding the corporate distributers that dominate the valley's primary industry, and severely undercut farmers. From two types of apples, to over 40 varieties of tree fruit, Applecart Fruits has spent the past 45 years investing in the multitudes of flavors that the season has to offer. We offer popular favorites alongside heirloom lesser knowns in apples, and have an array of peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums, pluots, and cherries throughout the summer and fall.
